Russia
Experience
the fabulous Atlantic Salmon fishing on the Ponoi
and the Varzuga on the Kola Peninsula and on the
Kamchatka Peninsula.
"Russia
is the new frontier
for American fly fishing."
Accommodations
run from primitive to excellent. Experienced Americans will be your
guides as well as Russian guides who are learning quickly the classic
Atlantic Salmon techniques.
On
the southeast of the Kola Peninsula, there are several delightful
salmon rivers, the Babia, Likhodeevka, Polanga,
Umba and Pyalitza. This area is mostly tundra
with sparse stands of birch and fir and much of the land covered
with heather, moss, lichens and other arctic plants. Access is easy
to the rivers.
Salmon ascend the rivers from late May till mid July followed by
a huge run of sea-trout that continues into September.
By late August, the autumn run of salmon has begun and will last
until late September. A helicopter is based at the camp situated
on the Polanga to take up to eight rods out daily
to the other rivers. This is flyfishing only and catch-and ãrelease
with barbless flies.
