2008 Scholarships

The Golden West Women Flyfishers Jo Clark Youth Fund is sponsoring two youths to attend FISHCAMP. FISHCAMP is a 5-day/4 night summer fly fishing camp. FISHCAMP is organized and run by The Fly Shop in Redding, California.

FISHCAMP is a unique program that offers boys and girls 10-15 years of age an opportunity to learn how to fly fish or to fine tune their fly fishing skills. Campers will learn about various fly casts, fishing techniques and strategies, reading the water, safe wading, the basic bugs that trout like to eat and even how to tie their own flies. Campers will also meet new friends and experience the outdoors in a beautiful setting. FISHCAMP is located at Antelope Creek Ranch in Northern California, approximately one hour from the town of Mt. Shasta.

FISHCAMP is a privately leased ranch with a stream and two lakes teeming with trout. Campers are housed in state-of-the-art walled tents with comfortable cots. Bathroom and shower facilities have flush toilets and hot water. There are separate facilities for boys and girls.

FISHCAMP staff is a select group of talented fly fishers, patient experts who enjoy sharing their love of fly fishing. FISHCAMP counselors make learning to fly fish fun and easy. FISHCAMP includes all accommodations and meals, as well as the use of the finest fly fishing equipment available (from Sage, Winston, Scott, Redington, and Loomis). Every fly, leader, tippet, rod, reel, and drop of floatant is included, as well as the Mel Krieger School Notebook, souvenir cap and tee-shirt. Campers need only bring their clothing, sleeping bag and personal items and arrange their own transportation to and from FISHCAMP

June 23-27, 2008
July 7-11, 2008
July 14-18, 2008

Each scholarship covers the entire cost of attending FISHCAMP, other than transportation.

QUALIFICATIONS: Each scholarship applicant shall be between 10 and 15 years of age and shall have an interest in learning to fly fish.

SELECTION: FISHCAMP scholarship applicants shall submit the attached application form and short essay described in the application form to Judith Austin Brown at 155 North Redwood Dr., Suite 125, San Rafael, CA 94903. All submissions shall be postmarked no later than April 1, 2008.

The Jo Clark Youth Fund Committee shall review all submitted applications and select its scholarship recipients by April 15, 2008. The Committee shall notify its selected scholarship recipients by mail no later than April 30, 2008.

REPORTING: Each scholarship recipient shall submit to Golden West Women Flyfishers a short written report of his/her camp experience on or before December 31, 2008. If possible, each scholarship recipient shall present his/her report at one of Golden West Women Flyfishers membership meetings.

PUBLICITY: Golden West Women Flyfishers and its Foundation, in its discretion, may publicize the identity and photographs of the scholarship recipients in its marketing materials, membership information, brochures, other literature, website, etc.
